The Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology's weekly Plant Pathology 250 seminar series is presented this week by Dr. Liliana Cano from the University of Florida. 

Seminar Title: "Discovering effectors from plant pathogens and insect pests"

Biography: Dr. Liliana M. Cano, Assistant Professor in Plant Pathology, University of Florida (UF), Indian River Research and Education Center (IRREC), Fort Pierce. She has a PhD in Plant-microbe interaction from The University of East Anglia (UEA), Norwich, United Kingdom. Cano joined IRREC faculty in early 2016, after having completed two postdoctoral positions, one with the Department of Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University (NCSU); a second, with The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL), in the United Kingdom. Cano has extensive experience in genome analyses of microbial pathogens and pathogen-plant interactions 1-6 and in developing effector-based screening tools for identifying resistance in non-model crops 7-9. Cano has also training in plant biotechnology, molecular biology and genetics, and is now working on relevant citrus diseases. Cano research aims in using genomics to identify pathogen effectors together with functional analyses to elucidate their biochemical activity and for the development of new approaches for breeding disease resistant crop plants.
